Doi Hin

The Setting

What the ridge looks like, what it is built from, and what else is worth stopping for once you have driven all the way up.

The grounds

Two hectares of terraced garden on the south face, held together by dry-stone walls that were here long before the building was. Everything is walkable, but it is a hill — the terrace sits about forty metres above the car park.

The full timber terrace seen from the garden below, valley beyond
An open-sided timber pavilion with a low lacquered table set for khantoke
A stone path stepping down through planted terraces
A small cantilevered deck projecting west over the drop, two chairs
Raised beds of herbs and chillies with the kitchen door behind

The mountain

The same view, three times a year. We are not going to pretend every month is the good month.

The valley from the terrace during the cool season

Nov – Feb

Cool season

The fog sea forms most mornings and burns off around eleven. Clearest air of the year, coldest nights, and the only season we are ever fully booked.

The valley from the terrace during the hot season

Mar – May

Hot season

Agricultural burning across the north can flatten the view to a pale haze in March and early April. We would rather tell you now than have you drive up for nothing — call ahead and we will describe what we can actually see.

The valley from the terrace during the green season

Jun – Oct

Green season

Rain most afternoons, everything violently green, cloud moving through the terrace itself. Fewest visitors, best light, wettest shoes.

Within thirty minutes

Six places we send people to, with honest drive times from our car park. None of them takes a whole day.

Coffee

Doi Chang coffee estatesไร่กาแฟดอยช้าง

The ridge that made Chiang Rai arabica famous. Several estates take visitors through picking and washing if you arrive before ten. Ours come from three growers up here.

Doi Hin is not real

There is no cafe on this ridge, and no account to follow. The brand, the photography, the menu and both languages were built by AlphaBlue as a demonstration — this is what we would make for a business that does exist.
